"The Bento Bestiary is a collaborative piece between
Nobrow stalwart Ben Newman and fellow Bristolian and writer Scott
James Donaldson. In the book they invite the reader to sample and
feast upon the Yokai, a group of mythological creatures from
Japanese legend that exist beyond the natural world.
Taking the form of anything from cats with two tails to monsters composed of smoke and black widow prostitutes these beasts and spirits are brought to life by Newman's illustrations that incorporate rigid lines and full circles into startling geometric figures accompanied by light-hearted and idiosyncratic descriptions from Donaldson, that together catalogue 13 of these wonderful and ghastly creations of ancient folklore.
The first ever book published by Nobrow's Small Press series, The Bento Bestiary was screen printed by hand using just three pantone colours in Nobrow's own East London studios and comes signed and numbered by Ben Newman."
